Francisco Carreiro da Costa is Full Professor of Curriculum Development, and Chair of the Doctorate in Physical Education and Sport at Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies. He holds a Bachelor degree in Physical Education and a Ph.D. in Human Kinetics (Technical University of Lisbon). His main research interests are teaching effectiveness, teacher education, and physical education and the promotion of an active lifestyle. He is the Editor of Gymnasium and an editorial board member of Sport, Education and Society, and European Physical Education Review, among other journals. He was awarded with the Golden Cross of FIEP, the Medalla Aguilla de Oro (Mexico), the Paso de Prata, INEF Galicia, and is an AIESEP Fellow. He is a retired Full Professor from the Faculty of Human Kinetics, University of Lisbon, where he was Dean, President of the Scientific Council, and Chairman of the School Board. He is also a past-president of the Portuguese Society of Physical Education, coordinator of the doctoral scholarships evaluation panel within the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, expert and investigator of the AEHESIS project, scientific advisor of the Universidad Pontificia Católica de Valparaíso (Chile), past General Secretary of AIESEP, and a member of European PE Committee. Currently he is an expert of the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education.
